Nerissa Russell of Cornell University's Department of Anthropology will present on the results of recent archaeological work in Turkey.
Neolithic Çatalhöyük in central Turkey has long been known for its dramatic art, including many animal representations and animal parts. On the basis of work in the 1960s, it has also been touted as a center of cattle domestication.
But there was never a full study of the animal bones from the 1960s project. Renewed excavation has rectified this, and here Professor Russell will discuss current understanding of the role of animals in the lives of Çatalhöyük's Neolithic inhabitants.
