The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures (DMLL) is very proud to announce that Elizabeth Getman '09 is the recipient of the Outstanding Student of the Year Award for 2009. Liz is a Spanish major with a dual minor in Italian and journalism; she has an overall GPA of 3.95, and a solid 4.0 in her Spanish, Italian, and journalism courses.
Liz received the President Peggy Williams Award for Academic Achievement and Community Leadership and the Phi Kappa Phi Presidential Scholarship, and is a member of Lambda Pi Eta, the Oracle Society, and Phi Kappa Phi. She is also a member of Sigma Delta Pi (National Spanish Honor Society).
Among extracurricular activities related to her love of foreign languages and cultures, the DMLL notes Liz's service as an undergraduate student assistant in multiple languages (Italian and Spanish), and her work with Intercombios.
She has studied abroad in Oaxaca, Mexico, and performed outside community service in foreign countries, most recently in Nigeria, where she volunteered with a nonprofit organization called Children of Rural Africa. Liz is also completing an honors thesis on the privatization of water in Chile.
Modern Languages and Literatures would also like to acknowledge and commend two other meritorious students. This year, we would like to recognize Larry Komrower for his keen dedication to academic excellence in the modern languages, and Josh Scott, who will be receiving a certificate of merit for exemplary student service to the DMLL.
We will be celebrating these award recipients as well as the great talents of many of our remarkable students on Wednesday, April 29, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the Handwerker Gallery at the third annual, "Our Languages, Our Cultures," a cabaret representative of all the languages and cultures that we teach. This event is free and open to the public!
