The Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology is pleased to announce that Skott Freedman, a 2001 IC graduate, will be joining our department as a full-time faculty member in January 2010.
Skott, who is currently completing his doctoral program at San Diego State University/University of California, San Diego, has been selected to receive the 2008 Editor's Choice Award for a tutorial article titled "Principles of Motor Learning in Treatment of Motor Speech Disorders." This article, cowritten by Edwin Maas, Donald A. Robin, Shannon N. Austermann Hula, Skott E. Freedman, Gabriele Wulf, Kirrie J. Ballard, and Richard A. Schmidt, appeared in the August 2008 issue of the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology. Articles selected for this award reflect the highest standards in the areas of research design, presentation, and impact.
The article is a tutorial that looks at the extent to which motor learning for nonspeech tasks (such as blowing a whistle) applies to motor learning for speech tasks (such as saying words).
Skott’s previous work has demonstrated the influence of attentional focus during oral-motor performance (Freedman, Maas, Caligiuri, Wulf, and Robin, 2007). Knowledge of motor learning and motor relearning is important for clinicians providing treatment to individuals with brain dysfunction resulting from congenital conditions such as cerebral palsy as well as from acquired conditions, such as brain damage resulting from a stroke.
