The Ithaca Faculty Commons is the model designed by Susanne Morgan and other faculty members as the product of the yearlong initiative directed by Provost Kathleen Rountree. The final report and recommendation is available for public comment at the Center for Faculty Excellence FD@IC page.
Due to budgetary constraints, the planning process described in September 2008 was reduced from two years to one and the proposal was expected to involve no new resources. The needs-assessment process and advisory group deliberations led to a recognition that our faculty desire support not only in teaching but also in scholarship and leadership, and additionally that freestanding workshops are of limited value in today's culture.
For Ithaca College in 2009 and beyond, the report recommends a model called the "Ithaca Faculty Commons." Based on the current level of support of a half-time coordinator, the model builds a network of affiliates through which all faculty development resources can be centrally accessed. Through a partnership with ITS, the model also builds a robust electronic environment to supplement face-to-face activities.
Comments on the recommendation are welcome and, in addition, anyone interested in being involved in the implementation process should contact Susanne Morgan.
