Carl Johengen, assistant professor (adjunct) in the School of Music, was recently named music director of the Cayuga Vocal Ensemble, Ithaca's premier a cappella choral ensemble. He takes over from IC colleague and mentor Lawrence Doebler, who retired from this position at the end of the 2007-8 season.

Comprised of 16 classically trained musicians, the Cayuga Vocal Ensemble (CVE) performs a wide range of choral repertoire from the Middle Ages to the present, and has collaborated with many local regional arts organizations, including the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, the New York State Baroque Orchestra, and the Ithaca Opera. The CVE is excited to follow Carl Johengen's leadership in the pursuit of its mission: "to create for ourselves and for our community the experience of music's ineffable power to touch the human heart and mind."

Carl Johengen has achieved considerable success as a choral conductor, voice teacher, singer, and composer.  He holds a doctor of musical arts degree in voice performance from the Eastman School of Music, as well as bachelor's and master's degrees from Ithaca College. He currently serves on the voice faculty of the Ithaca College School of Music and has held academic appointments at Nazareth College of Rochester, SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music, the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, Hamilton College, and Syracuse University.

He has conducted professional, civic, and church choral groups throughout New York State, and is the founding music director of the Syracuse Gay and Lesbian Chorus. He served for several years as faculty member at the Berkshire Choral Festival, and has led workshops in choral and church music throughout the country. He is an award-winning composer of choral and sacred music with over two dozen published works and several significant commissions.
