The Princeton Review has released its 2010 edition of The Best 371 Colleges, and Ithaca College is once again listed as one of the country's top institutions for undergraduate education. Furthermore, the guide ranked Ithaca no. 1 for best college radio and ninth for best college theater.
Only about 15 percent of America's 2,500 four-year colleges are listed in the book, which features detailed profiles that include school rating scores in eight categories plus ranking lists of top 20 schools in 62 categories. The guide does not rank the schools themselves on a single list from 1 to 371, or name one school best overall.
"We make our choices based on institutional data we gather about schools, feedback from students attending them, and input from our staff who visit hundreds of colleges a year," says Robert Franek, Princeton Review vice president of publishing. "We commend Ithaca College for its outstanding academics, which is the primary criteria for our choice of schools for the book."
The rankings are based on a survey of 122,000 students attending the colleges included in the book. The 80-question survey asks students to rate their schools on several topics and report on their campus experiences.
Ranked no. 1 for college radio, 92 WICB is a student-run station that broadcasts on 91.7 FM from the Roy H. Park School of Communications. Its 4,100-watt signal can be heard from the Pennsylvania border to Lake Ontario, while the Internet carries the station around the world via streaming audio at wicb.org. This past year, WICB was also named the top college radio station in the country by mtvU.
Ranked no. 9 for college theater, Ithaca College offers a professional training program with five separate majors in the Department of Theatre Arts. A half dozen main stage productions -- ranging from drama to opera -- are presented each year by Ithaca College Theatre, while a number of student-run groups produce work around campus and in the community. Notable alumni include Broadway's Kerry Butler (Xanadu, Hairspray, Little Shop of Horrors) and Matt Cavenaugh (West Side Story, Grey Gardens, Urban Cowboy).
The school profiles in The Best 371 Colleges also have ratings in eight categories that are based largely on institutional data the Princeton Review collected during the 2008-9 academic year. Ithaca College scored particularly high in the "green rating," garnering 98 out of 99 points on a scale that measures a school's commitment to environmentally related policies, practices, and education.
