2009-10 Vocal Jazz Ensemble Auditions

08/24/09

Contributed by Lauri Robinson-Keegan

The Vocal Jazz Ensemble, led by Lauri Robinson-Keegan, features jazz for voices, both a cappella and accompanied by their own band.  They perform at least 4 times per year in Ford Hall, with additional performances in the region.

Auditions for this group will be held during the day on Wednesday, August 26 from 10AM—4PM, and on Thursday, August 27 from 10AM until all interested singers have been heard.

A sign-up sheet will be posted outside of Whalen 3310 along with other information about the ensemble.

The audition will last roughly 10 minutes. There will be an "audition interview" sheet you should fill out BEFORE your audition time. You should be prepared to:

1) Sing a song of your choice (standard jazz, pop, or show tunes preferred). PLEASE bring music for your song! I will accompany you on the piano (or you may bring your own accompanist, or accompany yourself).

2) Sight-sing a part from a 4-part jazz vocal arrangement.

3) Improvise (scat-sing or make up a melody with words) over a chord progression of your choice. If you have never improvised vocally, I will play the standard 12-bar blues progression and see how you react vocally to what you're hearing.

Vocal Jazz Ensemble meets Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6-7:50 PM. Concert dates are October 11, November 6, December 7, March 8, and May 3. Music majors may receive .5 elective credit for the ensemble, non-music majors may receive 1 liberal arts credit.
