A live town-hall style panel discussing the documentary “U People” live from the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee will be simulcast via the Internet on Saturday October 3, beginning at 10 p.m.; the Ithaca College Center for LGBT Education, Outreach and Services has set up a website at which viewers can access the free screening. Viewers can also tweet their questions to the panel during the event.
The award-winning film "UPeople” shows those in front of and behind the camera during the making of a music video for hip-hop artist Hanifah Walidah’s song “Make a Move,” which depicts gay and straight women and trans people of color in a celebratory, complex manner. The documentary attempts to dismantle the blanket categorization and ignorance inherent in the phrase “you people,” by displaying unique individuals in possession of personal power and self-determination. A panel of distinguished academic, political and religious experts will join the directors of the film following the screening in a discussion about the status of LGBT rights and understanding, particularly in the southern United States. Viewers will be able to participate in this conversation by Twittering their questions to the panel.
Viewers may also prepare for the simulcast by watching the film online ahead of time to formulate their questions.
