"Threads of Hope" show cases Chilean arpilleras from the collection of Marjorie Agosín, Latina author activist, and professor of Spanish at Wellesley College. Arpilleras are small, hand-sewn and appliqued tapestries, originally created by women to commemorate relatives who were detained and "disappeared" during the military dictatorship in Chile.
An illustrated catalog written by Annette Levine, assistant professor of modern languages and literatures, will accompany the exhibition. There will also be a roundtable discussion featuring Marjorie Agosín; Jennifer Jolly, associate professor of art history; and Annette Levine on November 4 at 6.00 p.m. Agosín will also read poetry in the gallery at 12:15 p.m. on November 5. The work will remain on display until December 11.
All Handwerker Gallery events are free and open to the public. The gallery is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; and weekends, noon to 5:00 p.m. The gallery is closed to the public on Tuesdays but can accommodate group or class visits by appointment.
