An experienced administrator and educator has been selected as dean of the Ithaca College School of Business. Mary Ellen Zuckerman, currently a Distinguished Service Professor in the School of Business at SUNY Geneseo, will begin her new position on July 1.
Zuckerman served as dean of Geneseo’s School of Business from 1999 to 2008. Under her leadership, the school was awarded initial accreditation by AACSB International–The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and established a master’s degree program in accounting. She has been a member of the Geneseo faculty since 1985, teaching courses in marketing, organizational behavior, consumer behavior and market research.
“I am delighted to welcome Dr. Zuckerman as dean of Ithaca’s outstanding School of Business, which is poised to move toward even higher levels of quality and reputation,” said Kathleen Rountree, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “Her strong commitment to teaching, learning and community engagement is evident in her career accomplishments, and I am confident she will be a proactive, energetic and creative leader.”
Zuckerman holds Ph.D. and MBA degrees from Columbia University. She has been a visiting associate professor of management at McGill University and research fellow at the Freedom Forum Media Studies Center. Her research interests focus on the development of the magazine industry, the marketing research and advertising industries, and gender and media. She is the author of the books “Sources on the History of Women’s Magazines” and “A History of Popular Women’s Magazines in the United States, 1792-1995,” and coauthor of “The Magazine in America.”
In 2006 Zuckerman was awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service. She has served as president of the Mid-Atlantic Association of Colleges of Business Administration and the Rochester American Marketing Association and as a council member on the American Marketing Association Collegiate Activities Committee.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to serve as dean of the Ithaca College School of Business and delighted to be joining the Ithaca College community,” said Zuckerman. “The faculty, staff and students have created an environment of academic excellence and innovation in the field of business education. The emphasis on experiential learning for students and the commitment to sustainability issues are areas of particular interest to me. I look forward to working with members of the school community to continue building a distinctive and high quality School of Business.”
She succeeds Susan West Engelkemeyer, who served as dean from 2005 to 2009 and is now dean of the Charlton College of Business at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.
The Ithaca College School of Business enrolls some 700 students in its bachelor of science degree programs in business administration and accounting; another 30 are studying for an MBA. Since 2008 the school has been housed in the Dorothy D. and Roy H. Park Center for Business and Sustainable Enterprise, the first facility for a college or university business school in the world to earn platinum LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. In each of the past four years the school has been listed among “The Best 301 Business Schools” by Princeton Review.
