02/19/10

Contributed by Duncan Simpson

The purpose: of this Diversity Education Workshop will be to enhance participants’ understanding of the role diversity plays within intercollegiate athletics. Additionally, time will be spent focusing on the necessary aspects of building a more diverse and inclusive environment.

Who should attend: Anybody interested in issues of diversity in Intercollegiate Athletics.

Your workshop facilitator: Dr. Jenny Withycombe, Advanced Diversity Educator, NCAA and Diversity Consultant, Withycombe Consulting. Starting the 2009-10 academic year, Dr. Withycombe, of Withycombe Consulting, took over as the new provider of the NCAA's Advanced Diversity Education Workshops. In this capacity, Dr. Withycombe is responsible for providing on-campus diversity training to member institution administrators, coaches, and student-athletes.

Background information: The successes of minority student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and sport practitioners, whether by gender, race, culture, sexual orientation or a combination of all these elements, are numerous yet their voices are diminished by a lack of understanding of issues unique to them. This leaves a hole in the understanding of sporting experiences within American colleges and universities.

Many sport personnel face a marginalization unknown to those around them, and largely even to themselves. Not only are they subjected to the effects of a gendered society, but they are also racialized, sexualized, and de-cultured in the most stereotypical ways. They are never allowed to be themselves. Thus, there is much more to explore within the complex nature of race, gender, culture, sexual orientation, and sport. And practitioners are charged with the substantial, yet essential, task of combating the often combined oppressions faced by a diverse population of administrators, coaches, and student-athletes while simultaneously providing their primary services (e.g. consultation, counseling, training, rehabilitation, etc).

Topics Covered:

·         Defining Diversity

·         Interacting with Diverse Populations
