Ithaca College is pleased to welcome to campus as a Fulbright Scholar Dr. Olena Borysova from the Kharkiv Academy of Municipal Economy in the Ukraine. Dr. Borysova has a very impressive research and teaching vita that includes regional environmental impact assessment, sustainable business practices, and regional sustainable development for the Crimean region of Ukraine.

This Fulbright scholar placement came about because of the long-standing collaboration between Dr. Susan Allen-Gil, chair of the department of Environmental Studies and Sciences, and Dr. Borysova. Due to their mutual interest in educational pedagogy, Allen-Gil and Borysova applied for a NATO Advanced Research Workshop Grant to host a 4-day meeting on “Rethinking Higher Education to Meet the New Challenges in Environmental Security”. Their proposal was successful and in May 2008, Allen-Gil and Borysova co-directed this workshop in Ukraine for 36 participants from 15 countries. The contributed papers to that workshop (including one authored by Borysova and two authored by Allen-Gil) were published by Springer-Verlag in 2008.

This spring semester, Dr. Borysova is teaching an ESS course titled "Environmental Issues in the Former Soviet Union."

The Fulbright Program, the U.S. Government’s flagship international exchange program, is designed to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.”  With this goal as a starting point, the Fulbright Program has provided almost 300,000 participants—chosen for their academic merit and leadership potential — with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
