The Finger Lakes Project sustainability curriculum development workshop will be held at Ithaca College from Wednesday, May 26 - Friday, May 28. The focus of this year's workshop is on incorporating sustainability and social justice issues into curricula across disciplines. Through a generous grant to the "Commit to Change" program by the HSBC in the Community Foundation, registration for this 2-1/2 day workshop is only $50, which includes all workshops, meals and field trips.

The featured presenter this year is Nikki Henderson, executive director of People's Grocery, who will speak on "Food Justice and Sustainability". Henderson’s background includes research in political ecology and environmental justice, and she brings to the People’s Grocery over 10 years experience mentoring and directing programs with inner-city youth. An experienced grassroots organizer, Henderson worked with “Green for All” founder Van Jones to develop national programs for people of color in the environmental sector.

In addition, Sandra Steingraber, internationally renowned scientist, author and journalist who has been termed the new Rachel Carson, will lead a workshop session on "Human Rights and Sustainability Education". Steingraber, who serves as distinguished visiting scholar in the Ithaca College Division of Interdisciplinary and International Programs, will also screen the newly-released film "Living Downstream", based upon her award-winning book of the same name.

Every May, the Finger Lakes Project hosts a workshop at Ithaca College directed to K-12 and college educators who are interested in learning more about sustainability, course design, and experiential and cross-disciplinary learning. The theme of this year's workshop is "sustainability and social justice" and will include lectures and learning sessions on the following topics:

One valuable aspect of the workshop is hearing from other faculty about how they have incorporated sustainability into their own teaching and how their students have responded. This year, in addition to our two featured speakers, other faculty presenters come from Ithaca College, St. Bonaventure University, and University of Wisconsin-Osh Kosh. International participants include faculty from British Columbia and Cameroon. The workshop provides ample opportunity to discuss ideas, participate in hands-on activities, and form connections with other teachers.

Participants may also choose between three field trips: a walking tour that explores the social-ecological history of Ithaca, a sustainability tour of Ithaca College, or a tour of EcoVillage at Ithaca.

Finger Lakes Project workshop participants may also take advantage of special rates on College housing: double occupancy rooms with private baths for $50.00 per night.
