“Floyd Collins” uses music to tell the story of a caver who goes on a quest to find a “cave a’ wonder,” a new tourist attraction that will save his family from poverty. Instead, he finds himself trapped 100 feet underground in a cave, surrounded by darkness and cold.
Based on actual events that took place in eastern Kentucky in 1925, the story follows Floyd Collins, who was trapped for 15 days with a 25-pound rock pinning his leg. A media circus gathered aboveground as Floyd’s story became a national concern. As Floyd’s friends and family tried to free him, many sought to exploit the situation for their own benefit. The musical merges musical theater styles with folk and bluegrass, capturing the time and place of the events.
