Notes on Liberty, a documentary directed by Professor John Scott and produced by Adjunct Professor Karen Rodriguez, was recently selected as one of thirty documentaries for the 2010 American Documentary Showcase.

The Showcase is a program of independent documentaries funded by the US State Departments Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (BECA), and is offered to US Embassies for screening abroad with the hope of providing “a broad and diversified look at American life and the values of a democratic society as seen by American documentary filmmakers.”  The program is administered by the University Film and Video Association and funded in part by a grant from the United States Department of State.

The film playfully signals the difference between the ideals of the statue with the culture of fear and xenophobia that can still dominate post 9/11 America, as told through a boy's visit to the Statue of Liberty. Notes on Liberty was funded in part by a James B. Pendleton Research Grant.
