Phoebe Constantinou, assistant professor, Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education, recently published an article entitled, "Keeping the Excitement Alive: Tchoukball and Cooperative Learning," in the peer-reviewed journal, The Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, (volume 81, number 3, pages 30-35).
Some inservice physical educators argue that cooperative learning activities are not physically intense enough and that students are not motivated to participate in activities in which competition is eliminated. This article discusses how cooperative learning can be implemented in a physical education program while maintaining the competitive aspect. Cooperative learning can help students improve motor skills, develop social skills, work together as a team, take control of their own learning, give and receive feedback, and become responsible individuals. A relatively new sport called Tchouckball promotes "fair play" and accomodates cooperative learning activities without compromising the intensity of the activity.
