Thanks to external funding that director Jeff Cohen was able to secure, the Park Center for Independent Media is expanding. We are pleased to announce that Maura Stephens has joined us as associate director. A journalist, actor, public educator, and advocate of independent media, human rights, sustainability, and justice, Maura is a perfect fit for the center.
Maura has been active in the national media reform movement and is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists. With a long history of mentoring students from her position as editor of ICView, she is committed to the missions of the College and the PCIM.
She learned journalism during 19 years as a researcher, reporter, writer, and editor at Newsweek and Newsweek International. She later cofounded an early Internet enterprise before joining Ithaca College in 1997 as editor of Ithaca College Quarterly -- later ICQ and ICView. An active member of the campus community, she was an inaugural winner of the IC Choice Award, was honored with the 2008 IC LGBT Ally Award, and has served on committees including Diversity Awareness, Natural Lands, and Traditions. She often guest lectures in classes
Maura is founding co-director of Iraqi Refugees Assistance Connection and an actor, director, producer, playwright, and former organic farmer. She earned her MFA in creative writing from Goddard College and is a double graduate of Democracy School.
At PCIM Maura will be working on ongoing research projects involving independent media around the country, as well as mentoring student journalists seeking careers in independent media.
Please join us in welcoming her to her new position.
