Public_html Nova Folder for Web Publishing to be Discontinued

As of June 1, 2010, Web site material that is stored in a student's public_html folder on the Nova server will no longer be published to a live Web site.

The public_html folder allows students to publish Web pages to the Internet without the need to upload Web files using an FTP program. As part of the NSrA project, ITS is currently in the planning stages of transitioning Nova and other file servers to Microsoft Active Directory (AD) servers, and there is no equivalent Web-publishing capability in the new AD environment. Our reports show that very few students use this Web publishing option outside of class projects. For those students who do publish a personal Web site through the public_html folder, there are several 3rd-party free or low-cost Web hosting providers through which personal Web pages can be published. A Web search for "free Web hosting" will provide many options. Students can also create an ePortfolio through Web Profile Manager. ITS offers ePortfolio training through the ITS Workshop program.

Please note that neither the public_html folder nor any of its contents will be removed from any active Nova folder; the folder will simply cease to function as a Web publishing tool. ITS has been in contact with a number of faculty members, who will use alternate methods of Web publishing for class work. The Student Personal Sites listing will be removed from the IC directory page as of June 1. We regret any inconvenience this may cause.

Please contact the ITS Helpdesk, 274-1000, if you have any questions.
