Thomas Eschen Jr., a junior journalism major, received the Park School Student Writing Award on April 30.

The Park Student Writing Award is given to a full-time student whose work is produced in a Park School class or student media organization, and demonstrates creativity, impact, originality and mastery. The award may be given for a research paper, a creative work (such as a screenplay or script), or a journalistic article.

The judges for this award, in particular, were impressed by Eschen’s excellence in column writing. He used his reportorial and writing talents to craft a warning about overspecialization in sports among youth in an article titled, “Youth Hockey: A Cold Future.”  To read the article, click here.

“Tom writes with a precision befitting a craft where word counts matter and style distinguishes," says Mead Loop, associate professor.

Eschen has interned in the sports department at NBC Channel 3 in Syracuse. On campus, he is co-host of a sports and entertainment show on VIC radio titled VIC Talk, a sports reporter for the Ithacan, and the Thursday night sports anchor for NewsWatch 16 on ICTV.
