Members of the Ithaca College community are invited to attend a memorial service scheduled for Saturday, July 17, to celebrate the lives of the Rev. George Clarkson and Elizabeth Clarkson. The service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the Danby Federated Church, 1859 Danby Rd.

George Clarkson was the college’s first Protestant chaplain and also taught theology as a faculty member in the Department of Philosophy. He passed away this past April 12; his wife, Elizabeth, predeceased him in December of 2008. Officiating at the memorial service will be the Rev. Ed Enstine; a private burial will be held by the family.

Ordained a Methodist minister, George also held a Ph.D. in religion from the University of Wales. Among his many affiliations, he served as pastor of the Danby Federated Church from 1957 to 1962, at which time he became a chaplain at Ithaca College. He was known for his warm friendship, hospitality, and pastoral care and in 2004 the George Clarkson Lecture Series was established in his honor by the college’s Protestant community.
