Contributed by Erik Kibelsbeck

Soprano Deborah Montgomery-Cove, baritone Brad Hougham, and pianist Charis Dimaras will give a free concert of songs by Hugo Wolf on Sunday, September 12 at 4pm in the Hockett Family Recital Hall.

From Deborah Montgomery-Cove: "This is Wolf's 150th anniversary (1860-1903) and the second in the two part research and performance project for us. This book of songs was written in 1896 and set anonymous Italian poems translated by Paul Heyse. The poems were taken from Tommaseo's two volume Canti popolari (1841, Tigri's Canti popolari Toscani (1856), Marcoaldi's Canti popolari inediti (1855) and Dalmedico's Canti del popolo Veneziana (1848). By the middle of the nineteenth century Italy experienced a resurgence of its interest in folk and traditional poetry, many of which are contained in the above collections.

Wolf's creative life was short and quite sporadic. He achieved recognition at the age of 28. This left him 9 years to write -often composing several songs a day. His music is known for the total union of piano and voice through melody, rhythm, harmony and counterpoint and for the perfect declamation of the German language."
