ITS regularly receives reports of email "phishing" scams which request that users provide their account username, password, date of birth or other personal information to prevent an account from being disabled. ITS will NEVER send you an email asking for this information.
Users should never respond, either by sending a reply to or clicking a link in, these types of email messages. At Ithaca College, simply replying to such a message, even to write "quit sending me these scam messages!", will likely cause the sender's account to be temporarily disabled. When ITS becomes aware of a scam message circulating, one of our steps is to check to see if any replies were sent in response to the message. Any IC email account that replied to the message is disabled. This is because ITS has to assume that any replies to the scam message may actually contain account information provided by the user, and the account must be disabled as a precaution to protect the IC email system as a whole. The account holder then needs to come to the ITS Helpdesk to gain access to their account.
No legitimate company will ask you to send your password via email so it is safe to simply delete such messages. If you think the message might have some validity, confirm it by contacting the company cited in the email via a telephone number or website address known to be genuine, such as one shown on a billing statement.
Suspicious messages received in your IC email account can be forwarded to spam@ithaca.edu for investigation.
