Documentary Studies Course in Park NOW OPEN FOR NON MAJORS!

11/09/10

Contributed by Patricia Zimmermann

If you have been closed out, shut out, and denied overrides for courses in the Park School and its nationally recognized film school in the past since you were not a major,  think again:  it's a new era.

Seats are now open for all students in any major in any school in Non Fiction Film Theory for Spring 2011. Study documentary--the most ubiquitous and important form of media in the world--and join an international conversation.

If mixing together documentary, history, political theory, environmental issues, global perspectives, aesthetics, television, propaganda, cinema, new media, social media, emerging technologies, and debate on complex international issues  spark your intellectual passions, then you might want to enroll in:

Non Fiction Film Theory,   CNPH 30100, M 3-6:20 and Tues 10-12:05,
taught by  Professor Patricia  Zimmermann. 3 credits.

If Homer does not let you register, just go over to the Park School's Cinema, Photography and Media Arts Office for an override. Ask for Barb Terrell.  bterrell@ithaca.edu

The course explores and engages the history and theory of international documentary film, video, and new media/emerging media forms through exciting screenings of difficult-to-see works and readings which provide political/historical context and cutting edge conceptual models.

Documentary across all platforms --analog, digital, emerging technologies--is the most urgent and complex form of media in the world. This course connects the explosive history of documentary with new media forms like online archives, social media, user generated content, locative media, software art and more.

One week of the course engages the 2011 Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival.

All seats in the class are open to ANY STUDENT from ANY MAJOR on campus.  The only prerequisite you need are two liberal arts courses.

If you have tried and tried to secure a seat in a film school class, if you could not get an override in the past, and if your pleas for additional seats didn't work,  now is the time to take advantage of this never-before-offered opportunity.

You don't have to be a Cinema major or a Documentary Studies and Production major or a Park school major to secure a seat anymore.

Contact Professor Zimmermann for more details about the course at patty@ithaca.edu
