DJ Spooky, That Subliminal Kid is the stage name and self-constructed persona of Paul D. Miller, whose work has been published, recorded and exhibited widely throughout the world. He has collaborated with artists in a wide range of genres, including electronica, jazz, dub, reggae, illbient and trip hop. He serves as a professor of music mediated art at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland.
With the software producer Musicsoft Arts, Miller created one of the first applications that allowed the iPhone to be used as a music mixing tool. His DJ Mixer app has since been downloaded over 1 million times. The app serves as an integral part of “iPhone Mania.”
“Through the prism of my new album, ‘The Secret Song,’ and the app on my cell phone, I just wanted to show how you can rock a party using material from your iTunes library and mix it with your record collection,” said Miller. “There are remixes from artists as diverse as DJ Rekha, the Beastie Boys, the Budos Band, Sub Swara, the Coup, Major Lazer, Santogold, mashups from Daft Punk, Michael Jackson and even Malcolm X hidden there. Not to mention many other mainstays of downtown New York’s electronic music scene, like Anti-Pop Consortium. Basically, it’s a mix straight from the heart of some of New York’s finest collage artists!”
Miller’s multimedia performance pieces include “Rebirth of a Nation,” a remix of D.W. Griffith’s classic silent 1915 film “Birth of a Nation,” and “Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica,” which features field recordings that capture the acoustic qualities of Antarctic ice forms, reflecting a changing and even vanishing environment under duress.
Among his recent writing projects, Miller has contributed to “Green Patriot Posters,” a communications campaign centered on posters that encourage all U.S. citizens to build a sustainable economy, and “The Boombox Project,” on the history of boomboxes. His 2008 book, “Sound Unbound,” is an anthology of writings on electronic music and digital media.
Miller is currently working to build the Tanna Center for the Arts on the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu. The artist retreat will serve as a carbon negative, culturally supportive demonstration model, incorporating a digital media lab and island-restorative education center.
In addition to his performance, Miller will sign copies of his books and CDs from 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the McHenry Lobby of the Whalen Center. His works will be available for purchase at the signing as well as at the Ithaca College Bookstore.
