Esteemed journalist and author Robert Scheer (photo, right) and New York City’s unique, in-depth reporting outlet City Limits will share the third Izzy Award for outstanding achievement in independent media, bestowed by the Park Center for Independent Media.
Scheer and City Limits editor Jarrett Murphy will both accept the awards at a ceremony on Monday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. in Emerson Suites. The program is free and open to the public.
The Izzy Award is named after legendary muckraking journalist I.F. “Izzy” Stone, who for nearly four decades until his death in 1989 exposed government deceit and corruption while championing civil liberties, racial justice, and international diplomacy.
A longtime path-breaking journalist for both mainstream and independent outlets, Robert Scheer is now editor in chief of Truthdig, for which he also writes a deeply-reported column. In 2010 he published his sixth book, The Great American Stickup: How Reagan Republicans and Clinton Democrats Enriched Wall Street While Mugging Main Street. Izzy Award judges described him as “a beacon of journalistic independence who exposes both major parties on issues foreign and domestic, while giving voice to the disenfranchised.”
City Limits is an independent investigative magazine and news site that focuses on communities and issues neglected by mainstream media, such as charter schools, “the deepening economic crisis of New York’s black men,” and “the death and life of the neighborhood store.” The Izzy Award judges called its output — produced by two fulltime editors with regular freelance contributors — “a model of in-depth urban journalism that examines systemic problems, challenges assumptions and points toward solutions.”
Judges of the Izzy Award are PCIM director Jeff Cohen; University of Illinois communications professor and author Robert W. McChesney; and Linda Jue, director and executive editor of the San Francisco-based G. W. Williams Center for Independent Journalism.
“Robert Scheer and ‘City Limits’ both embody the spirit of Izzy Stone,” said Cohen. “They ask tough questions, do in-depth reporting, and give voice to the voiceless.”
The previous winners of the Izzy Award are investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill, blogger Glenn Greenwald and “Democracy Now!” host/executive producer Amy Goodman.
