Media Constructions of Sustainability: Food, Water, and Agriculture
This course will use the principles and practices of media literacy to examine how media messages are constructed and how they affect our individual and collective understanding about sustainability as it pertains to food, water and agriculture. We will explore diverse perspectives on sustainability with a focus on social justice, climate change, economics and the depletion of fossil fuels. Students will develop media decoding skills and practice critical reading and analysis of media documents pertaining to sustainability. Each student will conduct and present an original content analysis project researching how a particular topic related to sustainability has been presented in the media.
Prerequisites: Sophomore standing and above
