ICView Internships for Fall 2011

ICView, the magazine of Ithaca College, has two writing internship positions available for journalism and writing students for fall 2011.

These internships offer students a hands-on opportunity to learn how a magazine is run—from concept through production. You will acquire three credit hours and add a lot of bylines to your portfolio. Plus, your work will be read by our more than 60,000 readers. A pretty good deal.

Here’s what’s involved.

The two interns will work as a team, dividing the responsibilities of compiling the story list for and researching and writing the South Hill Today section of the 2011.4, and some of the 2012.1, issue of ICView. The South Hill Today section covers campus news and events. The two interns will also share writing (and fact checking) for the magazine’s Turn & Spin section, which announces and describes newly published books and CDs by IC alumni, faculty, staff, and students. Other assignments may arise, depending on need and students’ interests.

Interns will work directly with the ICView editor, who will oversee their work throughout the semester and provide guidance on the craft and process of magazine publishing.

While this internship is research-, interview-, and writing/revision-intensive, interns will also have opportunities to shape the experience according to their specific interests, which may include multimedia web extras, design, photography, editing and proofreading, or other relevant areas of magazine publication.

This internship is an excellent, all-around, hands-on writing/editorial experience. It will require about 12.5 to 13 hours per week and qualify for 3 credits. Some of this time will be spent attending campus events that interns will be reporting on; interviewing guest speakers, faculty, students, alumni, or staff; arranging and tracking down photography and photo credits; and other tasks needed for publishing a magazine on deadline. Attention to material that can be used online as web extras is also essential.

Demonstrated writing ability and experience required. Expertise using photo and video cameras desirable.

If you are interested in applying for this internship, please send a cover letter, résumé, and three writing samples by April 19 to Allison Kaiser, editorial assistant, at akaiser@ithaca.edu.
