National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6 (also known as National Nurses Day) through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. The theme of this year's celebration, chosen by the American Nurses Association, is "Nurses: Trusted to Care."
This year's theme recognizes the great honor accorded to the nursing profession by Americans. The nation's nurses are ranked first in the annual Gallup Poll's Honesty and Ethics survey, with 81 percent of Americans rating them "high" or "very high." More remarkably, nurses have consistently been rated first every year but one since being added to the ranked professionals list in 1999. When firefighters were included in the list in 2001, they rightfully claimed the top honors that year only.
The nurses of the Hammond Health Center exemplify the trust and caring that are integral to their chosen profession:
Congratulations and best wishes to this special group of professionals!
