Biking can be an enjoyable and healthy way to be engaged. It is important to keep your cycling fun by taking all necessary safety precautions. Here are some helpful tips:
BE PREDICTABLE!
· Drive your bicycle with traffic, not against it.
· When safe, use the right side of the road at all times. Use the shoulder or the bike lane when possible.
· Use hand signals when turning.
· Obey traffic signs and signals.
· Bicyclists are more likely to be seen by other motorists if they behave like motorists. Do everything other motorists are doing!
BE SEEN!
· Don't assume a motorist has seen you.
· Establish eye contact.
· Act under the assumption they are unaware of your presence.
· Use a headlight and taillight when driving at night. Use front and rear reflectors, spoke reflectors and pedal reflectors.
· Wear light colored clothing.
· Use your horn, bell, and/or voice to make your presence know to other drivers.
BE CAREFUL!
· Avoid road construction, congested traffic, and complicated intersections.
· Routinely check your bicycle's tires, brakes and safety equipment to be sure they are in working order.
· Be observant: look behind you and all around you.
BE SMART!
· Wear a helmet! Helmets save lives!
· A helmet only works properly if it is buckled and fits properly.
· Do not ride a bicycle while wearing earphones. You will not be able to hear upcoming traffic or pedestrians.
BE INFORMED!
· Know the rules of the road and all the precautions that can be taken to ensure your safety and the safety of others.
