Steve Tropiano, Kati Lustyik and Nick French ’10 were recipients of the Park School Writing Award.
A panel of Park School faculty whose professional expertise represent scholarly writing, journalism, and screen/scriptwriting reviewed the nominations and selected the winners. The awards were given out at the Park School’s annual senior dinner in May.
Student Writing Award:
Nick French ’10 was awarded the Student Writing Award for his original, full-length feature script titled "Joshua Grey." The screenplay tells the story of 16-year-old Joshua Grey who has to simultaneously deal with breaking away with the rigid traditions of his father while falling in love with another young man. The writing award committee felt French's screenplay was of a professional quality, not often exhibited by undergraduate students.
Faculty Writing Award:
Kati Lustyik and Steve Tropiano were co-winners of the Faculty Writing Award.
Lustyik, assistant professor in the Department of Television-Radio, won for her paper titled "Transnational Children's Television: The Case of Nickelodeon in the South Pacific." The paper examines the role of children's television in a global environment and is the fruition of years of work on her part. The committee was impressed with the recognition the article has received from around the world.
Tropiano, associate professor in the Department of Television-Radio and director of the Los Angeles Program, won for his paper titled "Playing It Straight: Reality Dating Shows and the Construction of Homosexuality." The paper applies gender/queer theory to reality dating programs with an emphasis on the FOX show "Playing it Straight." The committee was impressed with Steve's insight and the fact that the paper was awarded 1st place in the University Film and Video Association's Annual National Paper Prize Competition.
