Please help the families of Schoharie County by donating to one of the collection bins located in the Campus Center lobby and the Hill Center 1st floor. Many of the residence of this county, located 30 miles west of Albany are left with nothing as a result of Hurricane Irene.  They are in need of the following items:  Personal hygiene, diapers, canned instant formula, cleaning supplies (e.g. bleach, buckets, heavy duty garbage bags), non-perishable food items.

A member of the Ithaca College community for over 4 years, recent graduate (Class of 2011) and current Assistant Coach of the Women's Soccer team is asking for support.  For New York State Hurricane Irene left her biggest mark in Schorarie County (located 30 miles west of Albany), home to Gannon for 22  years. Surrounded by mountains on both sides, the Schoharie Valley offers some of the best farmland in the state.  Known as the Bread Basket of the American Revolution, Schoharie is a rural area where the way of life is farming and small business.  Everybody knows everyone in Schoharie.  Now, farms are gone, the businesses are closed, and the people are left with nothing.

On August 28th, Hurricane Irene caused the creek to swell and the flood evacuation alarms to go off.  Emergency personnel were forced to evacuate to higher ground and the National Guard was sent in by boat and air to look for those who were stranded.  Water ripped through hundreds of homes tearing houses off their foundations, sweeping vehicles away, and destroying everything in its' path.  In an area that knows minor flooding all too well, Sunday brought the worst the town has seen since 1996.  Over 40% of the homes in Schoharie have now been condemned.  If it is possible to take everything from people who have almost nothing, Irene fully succeeded.

Please help the families of Schoharie by donating to one of the collection bins in the Campus Center and Hill Center.  Many of these people have nothing left, so anything you give will be put to good use.  If you would like more information in helping further, or have any questions, please contact Schoharie County Community Action working with the American Red Cross at 518-234-2568, or Kelly Gannon at kgannon@ithaca.edu.
