We are looking for current junior students that you believe would be able to serve as a Peer Mentor in the Ithaca College Seminar courses.
What is a Peer Mentor: Peer Mentors were first introduced into the IC Freshman Seminar classroom as part of an IC2 demonstration project in the Fall 2011 semester. Peer Mentors work closely with their partnering faculty member to develop and deliver classroom instruction. These classroom instructional units are either related to first-year student transition issues or integrating content from their particular program of study into the freshman seminar course. The response from both Peer Mentors and their partnering faculty has been positive and as a result we are continuing the program for the Fall 2012 semester.
Here is what current Peer Mentors have said....
"Peer Mentoring in an Ithaca Seminar has offered me the opportunity to work closely with a professor and to gain knowledge about what goes into running a class. It's a great experience." Karlita Bleam, Double Major: Cinema and Photography, Sociology; Minor: Women's Studies
"Peer Mentoring is about building relationships; it's helped me really get to know some first-year students and remind me of what it was like. It also forges close relationships between students and professors. Overall, it's been an awesome experience." Megan Gaul, Major: History
"There is no better way to learn about teaching than to actually teach." Dallas Koller, Major: Sports Studies, Minor: Outdoor Recreation
Is there a student in your class, an advisee or a past student that is a current junior that you think would welcome an opportunity such as the Peer Mentor program? We would like to invite them to an informational session. If you would like to recommend a student as a Peer Mentor please forward their name and contact information to either Dr. James Pfrehm jpfrehm@ithaca.edu or Dr. Michael Buck buck@ithaca.edu
Thank you for your nominations.
