Native American Month continues with Charlie Hill, the first Native comedian to have achieved recognition on a national scale, with appearances on the Richard Pryor Show in the 1970s and as a writer for Roseanne Barr’s hit sitcom Roseanne. He has been featured in numerous films, tv shows and comedy slams.
Charlie uses his humor as political satire and commentary on the history of government relations with Native Americans. He is famous for his insightful jokes that reverse the roles of Native American and white culture (“He looked like the wooden caucasian I have on my front lawn!”). He is the only Native comedian who has appeared on three major nighttime talk shows: Jay Leno, David Letterman and Johnny Carson. Humor is an excellent way to tackle the sensitive topics of race, identity and oppression and Charlie does it with finesse. We think this will have broad appeal to students and will promote the idea of engaging with diversity as fun (and educational! But his content is not for those under 18!).
Selected appearances:
2010: A Good Day to Die (documentary)
2009: Reel Injun (documentary)
2004-2006: David Letterman Show
2005: CBC Winnipeg Comedy Festival
1999: On and Off the Res with Charlie Hill
Charlie will be performing Wednesday November 9th in IC Square of the Phillips Student Union at 8pm.
