Post BP Oil Spill and Hurricane Katrina: The Obstacles and Recent Progress in Southern Louisiana

When? Thursday, November 10th from 7-8:30 PM

Where? Klingenstein Lounge, Campus Center

This teach-in will focus on topics of social justice, environmental justice, and volunteerism. It will also include personal stories of the effects of and rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina and the BP Oil Spill in Southern Louisiana. All are welcome!

Featured guest speakers include:

Susan Allen-Gil, Professor and Chair of Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences. Allen-Gil specializes in environmental toxicology. In Spring 2011, she taught a Topics in Pollution course focusing on the BP Oil Spill, in which her students were able to travel to Southern Louisiana to see the effects first hand. https://faculty.ithaca.edu/sallen/

Mike Ellis, Director of Love Knows No Bounds. Ellis is a teacher at a local school but also has a great passion for service outside the classroom. He has been on multiple trips to NOLA to help rebuild the home of Ms. Audrey Armour with groups of volunteers recruited by LKNB. He understands what it's like to volunteer and give as much time as possible to a cause yet still realize the work to be done. http://www.loveknowsnobounds.org/

Brooke Hansen, Associate Professor of Department of Anthropology, Coordinator of Native American Studies. Hansen has worked directly with the Houma Nation, a Native American Nation that has yet to be formally recognized by the federal government. The Houma Nation has been detrimentally affected by recent hurricanes and the BP Oil Spill.https://faculty.ithaca.edu/kbhansen/

Liz McCartney, Co-Founder and Director of Construction at St. Bernard Project in the St. Bernard Parish of Louisiana. McCartney lived in Washington, D.C. before Hurricane Katrina and, upon seeing the destruction in the St. Bernard Parish and lack of progress being made after the storm, founded SBP with Zack Rosenburg. She has been living in NOLA and developing the Project since and has seen the progress and struggles on the road to recovery. http://www.stbernardproject.org/
