"Introduction to Traditional and Popular Jewish Music" (JWST 26200) will be taught by Max Buckholtz in spring 2012. The course is offered Tuesday/Thursday 1:10-2:25.
Max Buckholtz is a dynamic, knowledgeable teacher of Jewish music, and will introduce you to the wealth of the traditional and modern Jewish musical tradition.
These are some of the topics covered in the course:
What are the traditions that have inspired artists as diverse as Madonna, John Zorn, and Prokofiev? This course provides an introduction to sacred and secular Jewish musical traditions that have developed in the various diaspora communities throughout the past 2,000 years. Using a case study approach, the course covers the music and culture of the three main groupings of Ashkenazic, Sephardic and Mizrakhi Jewry, concentrating on developments in Jewish musical traditions since the middle of the 19th century: Yiddish operetta and vaudeville, klezmer, Radical Jewish Culture, Orthodox popular music, Israeli Mediterranean music, and others.
