01/05/12

Contributed by Don Austin

For several years, businesses, schools, and organizations across the United States have made the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday a "Day On, Not a Day Off" by volunteering in the community!

Ithaca College students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to give their time and energy on Monday, January 16, for the downtown Ithaca community celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. King. This year's festivities will include a guest speaker, performances by area choirs and a luncheon, free to the public, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at:

Beverly J. Martin School Gymnasium
302 W. Buffalo St.
Ithaca, NY

On average, 350-400 people attend this event, mainly families with school aged children attend the event!

There are 3 shifts available (you may volunteer for more than 1 shift):

• SHIFT 1: 10:00am-12:00pm (tasks may include helping to decorate, set up tables/ tablecloths & chairs, set up & serve food/ drinks, welcome guests, collect donations, etc.)
• SHIFT 2: 11:30am-1:30pm (same as shift 1)
• SHIFT 3: 1:00pm-3:00pm (tasks may include cleaning up food-serving areas, fold/ stack tables & chairs, wash serving utensils, pack up leftovers, etc.)
