Mr. Cao Hong-kai of Tianjin Normal University presented a lecture on Friday, February 10, in the James J. Whalen Center for Music. The lecture was illustrated with images and recordings. Ithaca College Faculty member, Professor Li Hong of our Modern Languages Department and instructor of Mandarin, translated Mr. Cao's lecture.
Mr. Cao discussed Chinese Quyi music, a traditional Chinese genre that uses singing and talking to construct ballads. Social life and cultural traditions are vividly reflected in Quyi music, one of the most important representatives of China's oral cultural heritage.
