Clarinets for Conservation is proud to present Ithaca College alumnus Michele Von Haugg and Scott Horsington in a lecture-recital on Thursday, March 29th at 8:15pm. The concert will be held in the Nabenhauer Recital Room, 3322 Whalen Center, Ithaca College School of Music. Admission is free, but donations are graciously accepted.
The performance will feature contemporary works for clarinet by Theresa Martin, Libby Larsen, and Eric Mandat that utilize extended techniques such as circular breathing, multiphonics, and quarter tonality. The lecture portion will detail the organization’s mission, its educational program, and conservation efforts in Tanzania.
Founded in 2010, Clarinets for Conservation provides an interdisciplinary approach to sustainability through music education. The clarinet is derived Tanzania’s national tree, the Mpingo, also known as African Blackwood and Grenadilla. The tree is of great value to artists, furniture makers, and hardwood carvers all over the world, but the high demand has threatened the tree’s future. Students of the program serve a vital role in educating their families and community members about the importance of protecting natural resources.
The program is made possible through the generous support of grants and donors.
