MUSIC FOR HEALING AND THE END OF LIFE

Christina Tourin, founder and director of the International Harp Therapy Program and an accredited music therapist, will bring her expertise to Ithaca to share with Ithaca College students. Tourin is internationally known for pioneering the use of the harp at patients' bedsides to create a "cradle of sound," supporting healing and helping to ease the end of life. Sponsored by Hospicare, Tourin will offer a public concert and conversation about the harp and its role in healing and end-of-life comfort.
Although a live performance is part of the event, there is much more on the schedule, including a presentation, informal Q&A and discussion, and a demonstration of the therapeutic benefits of harp music. The demonstration features "HeartMath," which shows a real-time graphical analysis of a participant's vital signs while the harp therapist attunes his/her playing to the participant. Audiences often find the results striking.
Since January 2006, Music Coordinator Jayne Demakos has overseen Hospicare's music program, developing the ways in which music can address the many needs of hospice patients. Demakos, a local professional pianist and harpist, has spearheaded the effort to bring Christina Tourin to Ithaca. She recently teamed up with Hospicare volunteer and Cornell alumnus Eric Woods, who wrote a grant and was awarded Cornell University's Robinson Appel Humanitarian Award. The award helped fund Tourin's visit.
Tourin's presentation will be March 30th at 4:00 p.m. in Iger Lecture Hall in the School of Music. It is free and open to the public.
