COMP-124 (which is tentatively called "Data, Place, and Time") is our attempt at providing IC students and faculty an academic environment to gain experience in spatial literacy. Our premise is that faculty members who are empowered with new computational tools will be able to utilize these tools in their discipline-specific scholarship/teaching in innovative ways.
COMP-124 is an introductory course centered around standard tools of spatial data processing (e.g. Geographic Information Systems). Hands-on learning will be based on real-world data such as spatial justice, early childhood development ecologies, growth of gated communities, etc; proposal based projects (coordinated in collaborative form over Google docs) will be the primary type of exercise; semester deliverables will include a poster. The course will be taught by Ali Erkan (aerkan@ithaca.edu) during the Fall 2012 semester (Mon/Wed/Fri 3:00-3:50 AM). Since faculty time investment is significant, the three seats have been generously funded by the Provost's Office with three-credits reassigned time. The expectation is that participating faculty members will come to all classes, do all assigned homework, take exams, etc, and subsequently be able to make use of what they learn in their own discipline. If you are interested in joining us, please provide a simple proposal by April 2nd that addresses the following questions:
The format of what you submit is not that important as long as it is succinct yet informative. If your faculty web page does not have an up to date CV, please include it as an attachment as well. The proposal (and CV, if needed) can be sent to Arlene Dende (adende@ithaca.edu). A committee will evaluate the proposals to choose participants that have the most potential for successfully integrating GIS into their scholarship and teaching.
