Tom Kerr, associate professor in the Department of Writing, publishes “Writing with the Condemned: On Editing and Publishing the Work of Steve Champion,” his chapter in Demands of the Dead: Executions, Storytelling, and Activism in the United States, an anthology edited by Katy Ryan (U of Iowa Press, 2012).

Of the book, Sister Helen Prejean writes: “Violence requires redeeming narratives. Demands of the Dead cuts through to the truth: the death penalty demeans and diminishes us. You will hear from prisoners, activists, scholars, playwrights, and poets. And you will want to do something.” Steve Champion’s chapter in the collection is entitled “The Sword into a Pen.” Other contributors include Kia Corthron (Life By Asphyxiation), Thomas Dutoit (“Jacques Derrida on Pain of Death”), and Sherman Alexie (“Capital Punishment”).
