Work by artists Christine Destrempes, Christo, Raymond Ghirardo & Megan Roberts, Philip Govedare, s.c. Thayer and Jen Torres are included in  "Uncommon River", curated by Gail Seigel.  They explore the concept of rivers from a variety of perspectives. Rivers touch all lives directly or indirectly, but particularly so in the Pacific Northwest and Idaho where agriculture, industry, commerce, energy, recreation, tourism, transportation and countless jobs depend on rivers and where rivers are central to public policy debates on water rights, endangered species and wilderness preservation.

Prichard Art Gallery to Host Uncommon River Exhibit, Feb. 22 Through April 7 Wednesday, February 15.

MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Idaho’s Prichard Art Gallery will present the exhibit “Uncommon River,” as part of its ongoing 25th anniversary celebration. 

The exhibit features the work of artists Christo, Christine Destrempes, Raymond Ghirardo and Megan Roberts, Philip Govedare, c.s. Thayer, and Jen Torres. The gallery invited immediate past director Gail Siegel to curate an exhibit in honor of the anniversary. The proposal was submitted to the National Endowment for the Arts and received funding through the Challenge America program. This is the fourth grant in five tries for the Prichard, an exceptionally good track record. 

The artists in the exhibit explore the concept of rivers from a variety of perspectives. Rivers touch all lives directly or indirectly, but particularly so in the Pacific Northwest and Idaho where agriculture, industry, commerce, energy, recreation, tourism, transportation and countless jobs depend on rivers. Rivers also are central to public policy debates on water rights, endangered species and wilderness preservation. “Uncommon River” will bring together a group of national and international artists to investigate cultural, aesthetic, political and the emotional aspects of rivers to highlight their importance. 

“We are extremely fortunate to have the very timely inclusion of work by Christo,” said Roger Rowley, director of the Prichard Art Gallery. “His ‘Over the River’ project recently received EPA approval to proceed and will happen in 2013. Along with Philip Govedare’s large scale paintings and Jen Torres’s installation, it will be quite the range of work. Add to that c.s. Thayer’s intimate scroll pieces of traveling down the Grand Canyon, Ray and Megan’s video river with what Christine is here creating, the sum total will be spectacular.” 

The opening reception will be co-hosted by the gallery, the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival and the Moscow Chamber of Commerce. This annual Community Kick-off event brings together the visual and musical arts to strengthen the connection the arts have with the community. Artists Destrempes and Torres will be present for the reception. 

The Prichard Art Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Gallery is closed Monday. The gallery, an outreach facility of the University of Idaho, College of Art & Architecture, is located at 414/416 S. Main St. on the corner of Fifth Street and Main Street in downtown Moscow.
