There's still time to register for the Ithaca College Gerontology Institute workshop, "The Importance of Recreation throughout the Lifespan: Playgrounds for Elders." This workshop is scheduled for Wed., April 11, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at Longview in Ithaca, and will be presented by Michael Cohen, who has lived in Ithaca since 1980, where he has designed and built playgrounds for children and elders.
Cost of the workshop is $20 ($12 for retired people). Ithaca College faculty and students may attend at no charge, but must still register. To register, go to https://www.ithaca.edu/gps/gerontology/registration or contact Ithaca College's Graduate and Professional Studies at (607) 274-3143.
Recreation provides benefits at any age; social, fitness, and rehabilitation built into life activities promote health and wellness as well as reduce limitations and restrictions caused by an illness or disabling condition. Playgrounds for elders provide older adults the opportunity to experience play--outdoor physical activity that can be shared with family members of all ages, and is fun. This workshop will provide the theoretical information on the value of recreation for older adults, and will describe the international interest in playground areas built for elders.
Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact the Gerontology Institute as soon as possible at (607) 274-1965 or email aging@ithaca.edu .
