On Saturday, April 21st, 2012 at 3pm, the Ithaca College chapter of the American Choral Director’s Association will be hosting the first annual Student Choral Composition Competition. The event will take place in the Instrumental Rehearsal Room of the James J. Whalen Center for Music and will feature brand new student compositions by Seth Waters, a Music Education and Composition double major; and Miggy Torres, a Composition major, that have been reviewed and judged by a panel of faculty members, graduate students, and undergraduate students of the School of Music.
This concert is modeled after the Choral Composition Competition, an event that takes place on campus each year. At this event, composers work and rehearse with a high school that they have commissioned a work for in preparation of a public concert, judging, and award for Best Composition. The student version of this event offers a similar experience to Composition majors in the School of Music. The compositions, selected anonymously by a panel including Director of Choral Activities, Lawrence Doebler; and four additional School of Music students, have been reviewed and selected for performance based on a variety of musical characteristics. Of the nine submissions to the competition, the top two were chosen and will receiving a public performance and recording of their piece.
