Windows 7 Upgrade Requests

As recently announced, Information Technology Services will begin deploying Windows 7 on newly-installed technology renewal computers beginning this summer. We recognize that some users may be anxious to have Windows 7 installed on their existing Windows XP computers, but please be aware of the following:

There is actually no "upgrade" option. Users will be required to back up their data and their existing Windows XP machine will then be "wiped" and have Windows 7 installed. Since this is a time consuming process for ITS desktop technicians and users, especially on a wide-scale basis, ITS will consider/prioritize Windows 7 installation requests (after June 1, 2012) based on several factors:

• Faculty computer compatibility - Since eClassroom instructor stations will be upgraded to Windows 7 over the summer, ITS will prioritize requests from faculty who are unfamiliar with Windows 7 and deem it critical that their office and eClassroom computers have the same operating system. Please note that eClassroom training will be offered in August.
• Technical need - Situations where an application REQUIRES Windows 7 to run properly
• Age of the computer - When it is due to be replaced under technology renewal
• Software compatibility - Whether existing software is compatible with Windows 7
• Availability of ITS technicians - Upgrade requests will take a lower priority than service requests, normal technology renewal installs, etc.

ITS is actively exploring options for getting all Windows XP computers upgraded to Windows 7. Please contact the ITS Helpdesk if you need Windows 7 installed on your current Windows XP machine.
