If you are a second-semester junior, or a current senior, now is the time to begin thinking about the possibility of a Fulbright application for the 2013-14 academic year. If you are interested, please see Hugh Egan (eganh@ithaca.edu) before you leave campus for the summer.
Fulbright awards fund study or teaching abroad, and they are available to students in every discipline. Research awards require applicants to develop a research project to be completed in the host country. English Teaching Assistantships (ETAs) do not require a full-blown research project; rather, students commit to serving as a teaching assistant in an English language class in the host country. The ETA application is relatively simple, no prior teaching experience is necessary, and students of any major are eligible and encouraged to apply. Fulbright ETAs are available in countries across the globe.
Fulbright is the perfect global "gap year" activity before attending graduate school or pursuing a career. Last year 21 Ithaca College students applied for Fulbright grants, and 7 of those have made it to the finalist stage.
Applications are due in mid-September, but now is the time to start planning! Make an appointment with Hugh Egan (eganh@ithaca.edu), faculty liaison for external grants and awards, before you leave for the summer.
