With subscriptions available for as little as $30, Ithaca College Theatre will kick off a new season of theatre. The season opens in October with a drama from Tracy Letts, author of August: Osage County. Ken Carpenter, a middle-aged man from the middle of America, discovers he's lost his faith. Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, The Man from Nebraska follows Ken on a journey away from home where he examines his faith and how we choose what we believe. The season will continue with the fall musical, Legally Blonde, telling the story of sorority sister Elle who gets dumped by her boyfriend for not being “serious”. She follows him to Harvard to show him just how serious she can be and learns that finding love is not always pink.
The next drama, by Irish playwright Brian Friel, is Translations set in a small Irish village in the days leading up to widespread starvation.British soldiers arrive whose task is to draw a new map of Ireland, replacing all Irish place names with names in English, a language the villagers neither speak nor understand. In the face of this extinction of their cultural heritage and identity, the citizens are forced to choose whether to follow or fight.
The new year starts with IC Theatre and School of Music’s collaboration to bring two of Puccini’s imaginative one-acts to the stage, the tale of religious redemption, Suor Angelica, and the farce Gianni Schicchi. Gianni Schicchi contains the unforgettable aria "O mio babbino caro". The spring musical, Spring Awakening, swept the Tony’s in 2008 and now this hard-hitting rock musical sweeps into Ithaca to take on the darkest recesses of teen sexuality. The schoolmates turn toward one another and away from a repressive adult society only to be tragically and irrevocably changed by their relationships.
Wrapping up the season is Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People, adapted by Arthur Miller who is widely considered to be a leading playwright of conscience in the American theatre. His adaptation portrays the fate of Dr. Thomas Stockmann, a whistle blower in a small, coastal Norwegian town bent on making profit from the tourists who visit its mineral springs for their health. Stockmann risks the welfare of his family, his livelihood and his very life to defend his conviction that the economic engine of his town, the mineral springs, is a source of pollution and disease.
