Abstract

It is the vascular connections within plants that link the millions of rootlets and thousands of branches and leaves that characterize this network as superhighway for the distribution of water, nutrients, energy rich sugars via the specialized tissues of xylem and phloem. These vascular tissues also provide plants with a mechanism to communicate information across great distance in the form of hormones, sugars, proteins, or RNA, all aspects of this being limited by the vascular biological and physical properties of these tissues. Within this Research Topic, we would like to host a forum for an open discussion of novel and often-controversial concepts of physics and biology of plant vascular network function that arises from recent advances in technology and modeling. We are looking for the contribution that discus or utilize innovative experiments and methods or present new models that provide an insight to function and structure of xylem and phloem.
