The Hockett Family Recital Hall in the School of Music will be the setting for a staged reading of "8", a play chronicling the historic trial in the federal constitutional challenge to California’s Proposition 8, written by AFER Founding Board Member and Academy Award-winning writer Dustin Lance Black.

The Homecoming Players, in partnership with American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) and Broadway Impact, are proud to announce a one-night-only reading of the play.

Four members of the Ithaca College community are involved in this production. Judith Andrew (library staff), Arthur Bicknell (alumnus), Greg Bostwick (faculty), and Luke Wise (alumnus) are in the cast.

8 is an unprecedented account of the federal district court trial in Perry v. Schwarzenegger (now Perry v. Brown), the case filed by AFER to overturn Proposition 8, which stripped gay and lesbian Californians of the fundamental right to marry.

“When we learned that AFER and Broadway Impact were making the rights available for this historic series of readings, we jumped at the chance to marry (pun intended) our passion for theater with our activism for social justice,” said Homecoming Players artistic director, Rachel Hockett. “We are thrilled to bring this play to Ithaca, New York, a wonderfully progressive community, in the fifth state to legalize same-sex marriage. Marriage equality is arguably the civil rights issue of our day, and we are honored to help keep the conversation going and to contribute to such a just cause.”

The Homecoming Players have assembled a cast from a wide swath of talent in the Ithaca area, including  Judith Andrew, Arthur Bicknell, Brett Bossard, Greg Bostwick, Jesse Bush, Mike Davie, Michael Donato, R. M. Fury, Ross Haarstad, Kevin Hilgartner, Rachel Lampert, R. M. Fury, Stephen Nunley, Judith Pratt, David Romm, Kristin Sad, Kit Wainer, and Luke Wise. Artistic director Rachel Hockett will direct.
