The Ithaca College Model United Nations team won three awards this past weekend at the Security Council Simulation at Yale.
This event is centered on a simulation of the UN Security Council, but it has also added committees that re-enact or imagine groups of 10-20 people involved in intense dilemmas or crises that may demand responses from different types of actors with different resources. Some of the committees are historically based, and some are fictional.
Each committee gave certificates of honorable mention, and one each to recognize an outstanding delegate and the best delegate. The three IC students who were recognized for their work are listed below, along with a brief summary of their committees and roles.
Kayla Reopelle (’14, Documentary Studies), Best Delegate
Kayla represented two different Supreme Court justices dealing with some of the most important cases of the 20th century. As Justice Hugo Black she deliberated on Brown v. Board of Education, and as Justice Samuel Alito she helped rule on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. In a third role, she played an advocate testifying on Roe v. Wade.
Avi Rosen (’13, Politics), Outstanding Delegate
Avi was sent to the mines as Renán Ávalos, a victim of the Chilean Mine collapse of 2010. As one of 33 trapped miners trapped for 69 days, Avi had to work with the others how to organize their supplies and their resources in order to survive.
Ryan Bince (’14, Speech Communication), Honorable Mention
As Nellie Bly, Ryan took part in a committee called, “Steel City Empire.” This group of Gilded Age millionaires and industrial barons discussed and negotiated mergers and monopolies, their links to the political and economic system and obligations to society.
